Optimization of sonic jet array flow sources for subsonic flow electric laser medium homogeneity
Abstract
A model is constructed for the development of the density and velocity field downstream of an array of subsonic jets. The optical homogeneity of the developing field is calculated, and criteria are established for configuring the jet array to minimize optical inhomogeneities at a given distance downstream of the jet source-plane. In addition to the optical homogeneity of the base flow, the development of the velocity field is calculated from this same model. This velocity field model is then used to estimate the additional time required to reestablish the original uniform base flow after a disturbance to the flow. Interferometric data are presented which demonstrate the validity of the calculations.
