Flow mechanics problems with reentry bodies
Abstract
Fluid mechanical problems of reusable reentry bodies are considered. The return path of a reentry body is divided into two different areas of flow physics, aerodynamic flow and chemical-kinetic flow, indicating the problem of wind tunnel simulation. Examples for prediction and solving of aerodynamic heating problems through wind tunnel tests are given alongside measurements on the ERNO LB21 lifting body. The flight performance, stability and controllability of reentry bodies are appraised.
