A report on the development of PCM-4-phase and delta M-2-phase SCPC systems
Abstract
Phase-shift keying modulation and error correction are described and evaluated for two kinds of single-channel-per-carrier (SCPC) systems. PCM 4-phase PSK-SCPC and delta M-2-phase PSK-SCPC systems are considered. The basic configuration of the SCPC system is reviewed, performance characteristics of the codec and modem are examined (SNR, frequency characteristic, signal format, bit error rate, cycle skipping), and practical applications to data transmission are discussed. The PCM 4-phase PSK-SCPC system is recommended for high-quality voice transmission, while the delta M-2-phase PSK-SCPC system is recommended for fairly good voice transmission even at very low CNR.
