The thermodynamics of fluid systems
Abstract
The present work provides a comprehensive treatment of equilibrium and process thermodynamics, with emphasis on the role of time scales in determining both the state coordinates of equilibrium thermodynamics and the affinities of thermodynamic forces of irreversible processes. Featured topics include the basic variables of thermodynamics, systems involving internal variables, systems possessing internal degrees of freedom, statistical thermodynamics, material invariance and viscosity, fluid mixtures, magnetoplasmas and superfluids, relaxation phenomena, the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and kinetic processes that are the time derivatives of distribution functions. The notion that the entropy of a system depends on the time scale on which it is observed is employed throughout to make clear the unity of classical, kinetic, statistical, and process thermodynamics.
