Multipath fading simulation for evaluation of a digital microwave channel
Abstract
A mathematical model of atmospheric multipath fading based upon the geometrical optics approximation to propagation in a layer is developed and analyzed by means of a Monte-Carlo simulation. The simulation provides a statistical description of the main and space diversity signals for a general line-of-sight path. The probability of fade and amplitude distortion are found to agree well with published experimental results, thus establishing a degree of confidence in the results for which there is little experimental data available. The delay distortion is found to be large enough to be a potential problem for digital transmission.
