Cold-cathode Penning ion source
Abstract
Measurements were performed in a permanent-magnet field of an intensity of 1400 Oe, varying the plate voltage from 0.8 to 3 kV. The discharge current, the ion current at the collector, and the ratio on the ion current to the discharge current are plotted against the plate diameter. A gradual increase in discharge current was observed for plate diameters ranging from 10 to 17 mm, whereas the discharge current increased abruptly in the case of a plate diameter of 20 mm. A minimum, however, was observed for a plate diameter of 25 mm at low pressures, which vanished when the pressure was increased.
