A double row of alternating vortices in the vicinity of a wall
Abstract
The behavior of vortices shed from an obstacle moving relative to a stream in the vicinity of a wall is examined analytically for the case of a double row formed in an ideal inviscid fluid in the Benard-Karman treatment. The first vortices detached downstream from the obstacle as the phenomenon is initiated are examined first, the wall being simulated by the method of images. Complex potentials of the successive vortices are calculated, with signs of the vortices alternating, to the limit as the number of vortices generated becomes semi-infinite and the first vortex approaches the wall. The limiting case with the wall absent is also treated.
