Economic applications of satellites for digital data transmission in the Federal Republic of Germany
Abstract
The economic feasibility of a domestic satellite communications system for digital data transmission within Germany was investigated. The bit rate of long distance telephony traffic during the busy period was estimated. Required bit rates for telex, data, and TV traffic were estimated for the busy period. The digitalizing of TV signals is discussed. The capacity of a satellite in orbit was calculated. Balances for up and down links were considered. Mass and power requirements of the space segment were determined. A cost analysis was carried out. The conclusion is that satellites cannot be used economically for transmission of the national telex ad data traffic in Germany.
