Tidal fading on short oversea paths elliptical, vertical and horizontal polarisation compared
Abstract
The effects of the rise and fall of tides and diffuse reflection at UHF on horizontally, vertically and elliptically polarized transmissions were investigated. It is concluded that distortion is most severe for horizontally polarized transmissions. Elliptical polarization would reduce the fading range but appears very susceptible to signal flutter due to diffuse reflection and in general vertical polarization will provide least distortion. It is also concluded that every effort should be made to avoid short sea paths between a UHF television station and its target area.
