Advent of space flight - Partnership for SAR progress
Abstract
Recovery success in NASA missions depends on attention to each of four areas: personnel protection and escape, including related features of spacecraft design; survival stresses and survival equipment; selection of recovery site; and recovery operations. Recent developments in technique and equipment are described in each category and past performance and reliability of NASA technology in civilian application and NASA operations is evaluated. Broader future application of space recovery techniques to civilian SAR missions is considered, as well as the possibility of civilian involvement in space recovery operations.
