Theoretical approaches to the analysis of laser resonators
Abstract
Several theoretical methods for the determination of optical resonator modes are considered. The classical integral equation is described. An approximation procedure is presented in which the integral equation is converted to a functional equation. The solution requires much less effort than the usual iterative methods. Comparisons of mode shapes obtained by the two methods agree. The alternate approach of numerically integrating the scalar Helmholtz equation directly is also investigated. The modes obtained by this method are shown to agree well with those obtained from the integral equation.
