Plasma capture in the vicinity of a neutral ring in the magnetic field
Abstract
An investigation has been conducted concerning the motion of charged particles in the vicinity of a magnetically neutral circular line. The neutral ring involved can be obtained by the superposition of the field of a cylindrical solenoid and the field of a cylindrical bar magnet. It is possible to derive a 'capture relation' which indicates whether a particle will remain longer in the vicinity of the neutral ring than in the other sections of the magnetic field. The capture relation provides a lower and an upper bound for the particle velocity component which is perpendicular to the magnetic field. Theoretical studies concerning the particle capture process and plasma compression effects have been supplemented with experimental investigations involving argon, helium, and hydrogen plasmas.
