An Empirical Study of Chromospheric Fine Structure Based on Simultaneous Spectrograms in the h, k, 8498 Angstroms and 8542 Angstroms Lines of Singly Ionized Calcium.
Abstract
High resolution spectrograms were obtained with the Vacuum Tower Telescope at Sacramento Peak Solar Observatory in the H alpha line, NaI D lines, CaII K, H, 8498 A and 8542 A lines in absolute simultaneity, as well as K line and continuum slit jaw images. The data include quiet and plage regions near disk center, and quiet center to limb sequences. Spatial resolution ranged between 0.5 and 1.5 arc seconds. From this data, two sets of CaII spectrograms were selected from the quiet sun and plage time sequences and the fine structure profiles identified using the K index. Statistical and visual methods are used to define 4 plage and 6 quiet sun fine structure classes.
