Das Mauna Kea-Observatorium auf Hawaii.
Abstract
The present work describes the very favorable observation conditions at the Mauna Kea observatory in Hawaii, and gives a brief description of the chief instruments in use at the observatory. At an altitude of 4,200 m, the observatory offers excellent conditions for IR observations. On the average, 75% of all nights are suitable for general observation, 56% of all nights can be used for photometric observations, and 20% are favorable for spectroscopic studies. The installation features two 61-cm telescopes and a 2.24-m telescope. The large instrument is a Ritchey-Chretien system with a relative aperture of f/10 in the Cassegrain focus and of f/33 in the Coude focus. A 3.60-m telescope is being built by France and Canada for use at Mauna Kea. A 3-m infrared telescope is also projected.
