Invalid 4.01-Gyr model U-Pb 'age' of the Nakhla meteorite
Abstract
It is shown that the U-Pb systematics of Nakhla are inconsistent with one or more of the assumptions required for the calculation of a model U-Pb 'age'. These findings indicate that model 'ages' for other radioactive decay schemes may be generally invalid. The systematics of Nakhla clearly demonstrate that the widely accepted 'primitive' Pb isotope ratios of the troilite (FeS) of the iron meteorite considered by Tatsumoto et al. (1973) cannot represent initial values for a single-stage evolution of the U-Pb systems of this other meteorite.
