Theories of gamma -ray bursts.
Abstract
Theoretical models are elaborated for the mechanisms and properties of cosmic gamma ray bursts. Source properties, source dimensions, radiation mechanisms are considered. Extragalactic models are presented which touch on the nature of supernova shocks, and neutron star formation. The relation between gamma ray bursts and stellar flares is probed, with emphasis on flares from common F and G stars, bursts from white dwarfs, and neutron star flares. Accretion onto collapsed stars is discussed presenting models for black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs. Finally exotic mechanisms are considered, namely, antimatter accretion, relativistic dust grains, and white holes.
