Population I and Population II stellar evolution
Abstract
Models for the evolution of Population I and Population II stars are discussed from the viewpoint of examining the features of evolutionary tracks in H-R diagrams. Phases of stellar evolution are described in detail, including the pre-main-sequence, zero-age main-sequence, main-sequence, evolved-giant, horizontal-branch, red-giant, and final phases. Evolution to supernovae and gravitationally collapsed objects is considered, and it is shown how evolutionary models can be improved by taking account of stellar rotation. The problem of determining the initial chemical composition of stars in open and globular clusters is discussed, and methods are outlined for obtaining the ages of such clusters from their H-R diagrams. Evolutionary tracks and isochrones of several cluster models are presented as examples.
