Improvement of the radiant of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite by direct calculation of the squares of closing errors.
Abstract
Observations of eyewitnesses of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite are reviewed. Several criteria for optimization of the calculation of its radiant are examined: the spherical removal of the radiant from the apparent trajectory, its removal with allowance for the angle distance of the bolide, and the area of the triangle formed by the radiant and the ends of the bolide. The point at which the sum of the square deviations is minimized is taken as the radiant. The computer algorithm used to find the least sum of the squares is presented. The horizontal coordinates and the radius of error of the radiant of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite are a = 13 deg N; h = 44 deg; sigma = 2 deg.
