Temperature measurements over the range from 300 to 0.00001 K
Abstract
The useful ranges, advantages, and disadvantages of various temperature-measuring devices (gas thermometers, vapor pressure thermometers, acoustical thermometers, thermocouples of various types, paramagnetic thermometers, and nuclear orientation thermometers) are reviewed and compared, with emphasis on absolute accuracy, reproducibility of readings, sensitivity and resolution of minute temperature differences, response to magnetic fields, ease of handling, size of body measured, and cost. Temperature scales and basic requirements applicable to all temperature gages are discussed. Cryogenic measurement problems are emphasized.
