39Ar-40Ar dating of lunar rocks: effects of grain size and neutron irradiation.
Abstract
Possible effects of grain size and irradiation on the behavior of Ar isotopes in lunar rocks were investigated by determining the release characteristics of Ar isotopes from unirradiated whole-rock and mineral samples as well as from reactor-irradiated aliquots. Different grain-size samples obtained from lunar rocks 75075 and 12064 were used, and the characteristics of Ar release are discussed with reference to neutron flux, grain size, and heating procedure. An explanation of the Ar release phenomena is offered. The effect of the potassium distribution in ilmenite and pyroxene is also considered.
