Applications of digital filtering to telecommunications
Abstract
The digitalization of filtering is discussed in terms of its technical ramifications. Digital filters present several advantageous characteristics: small size, high stability, and good reproducibility. Specific applications investigated include PCM channel filters, and the transmultiplexer, a system which converts a time-division multiplex into a frequency-division multiplex. The reduction in required calculation speed that results from breaking down the filtering operation into extrapolation and interpolation is particularly useful when the cutoff frequency of the filter is small with respect to the sampling frequency. The method is also convenient if the input and output sampling frequencies of the filter are different.
