Transient, laminar free convection from a uniformly heated vertical plate
Abstract
An expression is proposed for the transient behavior of a vertical plate subjected to a step in heat flux density. The plate and the surrounding region are assumed to be initially at a uniform temperature with negligible heat capacity for the plate. The analysis is limited to conditions such that the steady-state solution will be in the laminar boundary layer regime. The expression is proposed as a general correlation for free convection from a vertical plate following a step in heat flux density for all times, any Prandtl number greater than 0.01, and any local Rayleigh number in the laminar boundary layer regime. Further investigations are necessary to resolve the discrepancies in earlier results.
