Population-inverted medium for stimulated emission in vacuum ultraviolet
Abstract
Populations of excited states of multicharged He-like ions in a high-temperature plasma are calculated. It is shown that if the optical thickness of a plasma in resonance lines is not too large (less than 30), inversion occurs between a number of triplet and singlet levels. For ions with charges of the order of 10, emission at a wavelength of about 5 to 15 nm corresponds to the inverted transitions. The dependences of inversion magnitude and gain coefficient on plasma density and temperature are determined. The possibility is considered of achieving lasing in these systems with the aid of stimulated anti-Stokes scattering of the visible laser radiation.
