Experimental investigations of extinction on small meteoritic particles.
Abstract
The spectral dependence of extinction at wavenumbers between 1.3 and 5.0 inverse microns by small particles obtained from stony-meteorite fragments is investigated. The form and size of particles were studied simultaneously. The results of the experiment are compared with theoretical calculations and results of investigations of interstellar extinction. It is concluded that in the spectral range under investigation, the curve of interstellar extinction (including such details as the knee at 2.3 inverse microns and the intensive hump in the ultraviolet at 4.6 inverse microns) can be interpreted as the result of extinction by small particles which resemble stony meteorites in their composition.
