Varactor diode requirements for radar low noise front end
Abstract
Equations are given for the design of low-noise varactor diodes, and the characteristics of various types of varactor diodes are tabulated. The equivalent circuit of a varactor diode is also diagrammed. The simplified equivalent circuit consists of a load inductance, a 'spreading' resistance, and a variable capacitor in series, and the capacitance due to encapsulation in parallel with this series circuit. Types of diodes described include alloyed, diffused, point contact metal semiconductor, and MOS. These diodes have application potential in parametric amplifiers for radar.
