Origin and propagation of cosmic rays
Abstract
The paper reviews the present status of observations regarding high-energy cosmic rays and studies the effect of these data on current theories of cosmic ray origin and propagation. Information on cosmic ray energy density, spectrum of protons, elemental composition of the nuclei and its energy dependence, isotopic composition and its energy dependence, ultraheavy nuclei, the spectra of electrons and positrons, anisotropy measurements, synchrotron radiation, and gamma rays is discussed. Problems related to the Fermi acceleration mechanism and the supernova origin of cosmic rays are indicated.
