The measurement of the intensity and spectral composition of Mars gamma radiation on the Mars-5 spacecraft
Abstract
The Mars-5 gamma spectrometer consisted of a scintillation counter with a NaI crystal and a 256 channel pulse amplitude analyzer. A series of measurements was conducted of gamma radiation - caused by interactions of cosmic rays with the spacecraft construction materials and with the detector - at various points of the earth-Mars trajectory. Then measurements from Mars orbit were made of the intensity and spectral structure of the Mars gamma radiation at latitudes from plus 25 degrees to minus 50 degrees and longitudes from 170 degrees W to 320 degrees E.
