Numerical determination of the mean characteristics of a turbulent pipe jet - Stability of the calculations and choice of scales
Abstract
The present work concerns the numerical computation of velocity profiles for a turbulent jet flowing into the atmosphere through a circular nozzle, where the flow characteristics are identical to those of a fully developed pipe flow. Theoretical results obtained are compared to experimental data, and it is concluded that with a suitable selection of length scale, it is possible to precisely predict the behavior of a pipe jet. The computations rely heavily on empirical formulas; more complex turbulence schemes will be required to escape from this limitation.
