Remarks on the effect of carrier phase, timing and synchronisation of local reference signals on optimum linear equalization of single-sided data signals
Abstract
It is shown that the choice of the carrier phase, the sampling instant and the position of the reference tap of a linear transversal equalizer may be of considerable importance in achieving a small residual distortion in a single-sideband partial-response class IV data system. The question of an optimum choice of these parameters is discussed with reference to a best possible detection of the distorted signal either before or after the equalization. For signals with low distortions a relation for the approximate calculation of the optimum values of the carrier phase and the sampling instant can be derived. This relation yields acceptable results within a range that is determined by computer simulations.
