Crystalline cores and the Pomeranchuk effect in neutron stars
Abstract
A qualitative examination is made of specific low-temperature effects applying to the neutron fluid in the central cores of pulsars. The effect observed by Pomeranchuk in regard to liquid He 3 is described in which the liquid-crystalline phase transition during adiabatic compression of a Fermi fluid results in a slight cooling of the crystalline neutron core. This effect is shown to have a substantial influence on the nature of neutron star cooling curves. It is found that melting of the crystalline core or crystallization of more neutron fluid is possible during further stellar evolution. In both cases, radial stresses will arise which may result in starquakes.
