Ionized gas in the direction of the galactic center. II. The line of sight problem.
Abstract
It is shown that 6-cm radio recombination-line observations can be used to decide whether the emission originates in the galactic center or along the line of sight. The lines originating in the galactic center are broad and have large radial velocities, while the lines originating along the line of sight are narrow and have radial velocities near zero. The lines originating along the line of sight show a velocity asymmetry when plotted in a velocity-latitude diagram. This asymmetry is also present in recombination-line data taken at 18 cm and in observations of neutral hydrogen.
