Asteroidal Motion at the 5/2, 7/3 and 2/1 Resonances
Abstract
The collision hypothesis is tested for the formation of the Kirkwood gaps at the resonances 5/2, 7/3, and 2/1. The model is based on the plane elliptic restricted three-body problem averaged by Schubart's (1964) method. Including earlier results obtained for the 3/1 resonance, this model supports the collision hypothesis to a great extent. The model does not explain the complete observed width of the gaps or the absence of almost circular orbits in some cases and it does not favor collisions in the 7/3 gap.
