Radial velocities and neutral hydrogen content of the tails of the interacting galaxies NGC 4038/39.
Abstract
Summary. Neutral hydrogen has been observed in the double galaxy NGC 4038/39 (Arp 244). A considerable amount of neutral hydrogen was found along the two arms (antennas). The observed radial velocities strongly support the view that the antennas are part of the double system. More than a third of all H I is connected with the tails, i.e. 1.2 x tO M0 out of a total of 2.8 x tO M0 (for an adopted distance of 14 Mpc). Key words: neutral hydrogen galaxies interacting galaxies
