Electronic energy transfer in rare gas mixtures
Abstract
In a spectroscopic study carried out in this laboratory a new energy transfer mechanism from a noble gas molecule to an atom was identified. This transfer process is similar to the Penning ionization in the sense that it populates energy levels of a guest atom selectively within a certain range. A mixture of Ar:Xe was studied. This report discusses these studies using time dependence of spectra. The bulk of the material is presented in three papers, each of which is self-contained. The first paper gives a detailed description of the apparatus and characteristics of the transverse discharge. The second paper is a study of the He/Xe system, with reference in particular to the operation of the infrared laser based on this mixture. The third paper is a description of our experiments on the excitation of ionized xenon. A very short report is attached on experiments of vacuum spark gaps. Spectra of carbon and lithium have been photographed in the visible and near u.v.
