High power output circuit study
Abstract
The feasibility of an output circuit subassembly linking two high power amplifiers to an antenna for satellite applications was investigated. The frequency band ranges between 11.7 and 12.5 GHz and the output power of the amplifier between 100 and 800 W. Theoretical trade-offs for solutions included detailed analysis of X-band waveguides, switches, filters, and thermal chokes. Two waffle iron filters were developed and tested. A measurement technique was optimized for testing the insertion loss of waveguide samples before and after chemical surface treatment. High power thermovacuum tests on waveguide and filter prototypes showed no glow phenomena. Critical areas are expected for power above 200 W.
