Supersonic flow investigations with a photon correlator
Abstract
Experiments in supersonic airstreams using a photon correlator have been carried out at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in collaboration with the Royal Radar Establishment, the most recent ones consisting of measurements of the flow-field around a 10-deg cone at a Mach number of 1.5. The optical design of the two-color system which was used for the latter experiments, based on an argon-ion laser and capable of measuring two components of velocity simultaneously, is described and some results presented. The theoretically predicted shape of the correlator output is also discussed and shown to agree closely with experiment.
