Numerical simulation of the convective motion of a cavity heated from above
Abstract
A numerical procedure is used to study the convective motion of a fluid in a cavity whose upper wall is heated nonuniformly, a situation which can be viewed as heating through a free surface. The finite difference method is used to solve the equations of motion, continuity and energy for a Newtonian fluid with constant physical properties in the Boussinesq approximation. Numerical results agree well with those obtained in experiments performed on a rectangular cavity filled with air at atmospheric pressure.
