An investigation of a remote transient heat flux sensor. Part 2: Error analysis
Abstract
The second part of the report is error analysis of a remote heat flux sensor. The Chromel Alumel thermocouple measurement in a finite rectangular slab exposed to a constant heat flux is analyzed for error due to distortion of temperature by cavities drilled. In the experiment three test pieces 1 in., 3/4 in., and 1/2 in. thick of steel plates initially at the room temperature are exposed to a heat flux of 1700 Btu/ft sq. hr. Errors in the response of temperature due to disturbance by the cavities of 1/16 in., 1/8 in., 1/4 in., and 1/2 in. hole diameter at four different depths are determined. It is found that error ranging 8 to 18% is more sensitive to the hole diameter than the variation in depth between 20 to 80% of the plate thickness. Guideline for correction of the temperature response measured by an intrinsic thermocouple is then established before the inversion of the data for prediction of the transient surface and heat flux is made.
