Separation of solar and interplanetary transport processes for flare accelerated particles
Abstract
The azimuthal propagation of solar flare accelerated particles is considered. In particular, the question as to whether this propagation takes place close to the sun or in the interplanetary medium is discussed. On the basis of recent measurements it is concluded that the propagation does not take place in the interplanetary medium, and the only reasonable alternative is close to the sun, probably in the corona. The existence of two different flare particle propagation modes on the sun (fast propagation in the initial phase, slow drift and diffusion outside the fast propagation region) need to be further substantiated using satellite observations.
