Linear and limiting L to X-band up converter for space applications
Abstract
Description of a 10-dB up-converter developed in two versions, a linear and a limiting one, as a TWT driver for satellite use. The linear converter uses two balanced Schottky diodes, which permitted elimination of the input filter. The RF circuits utilized evanescent mode filters arranged in a below-cutoff waveguide, allowing control of higher harmonic signals. The block diagram for the limiting converter is the same as that for the linear one. The limiting response is obtained by keeping the transistor amplifier in linear operation and the working point well beyond the saturation point of the diodes, thereby avoiding an excessive increase of the AM/PM conversion characteristics of the assembly. The circuitry is realized in thin film on a substrate on which capacitors and RF and biasing resistors in thick film have already been deposed, which reduced the number of solderings to a minimum and eliminated the need for a sealing box.
