Ratio of axial and radial stiffness in an axisymmetric magnetic bearing
Abstract
The ratio of axial and radial stiffness was calculated for a magnetic bearing. Formulas were derived for the axial and radial stiffness as functions of magnetic surface mass and second order differentials of the magnetic potential, leading to a formula for the stiffness ratio with the radial magnetic field strength as a parameter. If the rotor charge is positive, the ratio is found to be greater than or equal to 2.
