Study of conversion repeaters in view of the requirements for spectrum efficient modulation systems in the up-link to broadcast satellites, volume 1
Abstract
As candidate uplink methods, an analog system applying narrowband FM (NBFM) and two DPCM systems differing in method of digitalization, modulation and access, are considered. These systems are evaluated in terms of their spectrum utilization efficiencies as well as of the complexity of the modulation conversion process needed onboard the satellite for downlink transmission. Three repeater configurations are conceptually defined and assessed. It is found that modulation conversion repeaters can effectively contribute to improve the uplink spectrum utilization. The NBFM uplink is suitable for increasing spectrum utilization at minimum repeater mass. The digital FDMA uplink is most effective for maximum spectrum utilization at the expense of increased system complexity and new repeater technology.
