Propagation of shock waves in inhomogeneous media
Abstract
A model for the approximate solution of the shock wave propagation problem is proposed which provides a physical interpretation of Whitham's (1958) method and also establishes the range of applicability of this method. The general conditions for which Whitham's method is particularly effective are derived. Several special cases of shock wave propagation are examined.
