Three dimensional visualization by high speed holography of a projectile wake launched at Mach 2
Abstract
Holography in diffuse light was used successfully for the three-dimensional visualization of the turbulent wake of a tracer bullet (30 mm diameter) launched in a ballistic range at a velocity of 730 m/s. Two holograms (18 cm x 24 cm) were recorded simultaneously in two different directions (60 deg) with the aid of a single mode ruby laser (20 ns, 150 mJ giant pulse). Each hologram covered a viewing angle of the order of 15 deg. The method presented allows fundamental investigations of the spatial configuration of turbulences.
