Interactions between turbulent boundary layers and flexible walls
Abstract
The influence of a flat flexible wall on a fully developed turbulent boundary layer flow along this wall is discussed theoretically. For simplification, this influence is represented by a small perturbation of a turbulent boundary layer flow along a solid wall. The linear problem for the perturbation flow is transferred to an integral equation, which is treated by an approximation. A rough estimation, using also experimental results, indicates that the flexible wall causes drag reduction. In air this reduction is one or two promille, whereas in water the reduction is in the order of magnitude of 5 to 10%.
