Prospects for X-ray lasers
Abstract
A review is given of approaches toward atomic X-ray lasers. Work in about half a dozen laboratories in the U.S. and Europe centers on the use of laser-produced plasmas to obtain inversion on atomic X-ray transitions. Much theoretical work is being done by the Soviets on a gamma-ray or X-ray nuclear laser based on the Moessbauer effect. The Soviets estimate that their work might lead to a working device within 5 to 10 years. The laser plasma approach is described in some detail.
