Effect of free-stream turbulence on turbulent shear layers
Abstract
A general review is given, including comments on the physical processes involved. The effect of grid generated turbulence with length scales of the order of the thickness of the underlying constant pressure boundary layer is fairly well documented. Free shear layers can be bodily displaced by free plan turbulence, leading to large increases in apparent spreading rate.
