Analysis of drift-generating moments acting on a deformed rotor in an electrostatic suspension
Abstract
An analysis is made of the disturbing moments which act on a rotor in an electrostatic suspension when the rotor's shape is deformed somewhat from the spherical. Three types of asymmetry which occur in actual electrostatic suspensions are considered: an ellipsoidal rotor, a rotor with an equatorial facet, and a rotor with a polar facet. The equations derived make it possible to calculate the maximal moments and qualitatively evaluate the effect of each distorting factor on the magnitude of the drift-generating moment.
