Plasma frequency multipliers
Abstract
This book considers questions related to the theoretical and experimental development of plasma microwave-frequency multipliers. Various nonlinear plasma phenomena are analyzed, and considerable attention is given to processes occurring at a plasma-metal boundary. A detailed description is given for a plasma varactor, a nonlinear element that is a plasma analog of the semiconductor junction. It is shown that a multiplier incorporating a plasma varactor attains a conversion efficiency of the order of 50% for the second harmonic with a high-level of input power. This significantly exceeds the capabilities of semiconductor devices. A review of literature on plasma multipliers is presented together with recommendations for constructing such multipliers and data for engineering calculations.
