Flight theory and construction of ballistic rockets
Abstract
The present text covers the flight theory, design, and construction of ballistic rockets. The first part of the book discusses the general theory of ballistic-rocket flight. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion, the forces and moments acting on a rocket in flight, ballistic trajectories, and the principles of control and stabilization of rocket motion are examined. The second part of the book is concerned with the construction and design principles for practical ballistic rockets. The topics covered include the loads acting on a rocket; fuels and structural materials; classification of rockets and the choice of a structural design; the construction of various subsystems, including warheads, fuel tanks, and instrument compartments; solid- and liquid-fuel rocket engines; guidance systems; and hydraulic systems. Missile launch complexes are also discussed, with examples taken from Thor and Minuteman systems.
